Welsh began arriving in North Carolina during the 1720s and 1730s, initially making their homes in the Cape Fear region. Although the Welsh were fewer than many of the other migrant groups, they played a significant role in the shaping of the colony and then during the Revolutionary War. My research has shown that almost twenty per cent of North Carolina’s Patriot troops during the war were either born in Wales or were first or second generation Welsh-Americans.

Welsh began arriving in North Carolina during the 1720s and 1730s, initially making their homes in the Cape Fear region. Although the Welsh were fewer than many of the other migrant groups, they played a significant role in the shaping of the colony and then during the Revolutionary War. One researcher found that more than ten per cent of North Carolina’s Patriot troops during the war were either born in Wales or were first or second generation Welsh-Americans.
