In the pre-1800 period, we rely heavily on the following records. Being familiar with them will help you progress your family tree beyond 1800:
- Wills: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/.../wills-and-testaments. Note: Many wills from 1513 to 1925 are on ScotlandsPeople but this is not all wills.
- Tax records: Scotlands places
- Court of Session: Scottish indexes
- Deeds: Learning deeds
- Sasines - Scottish Property Records: Sasines
- Privy Council Records: Privy council, and also see Ancestry
- Sheriff Court records: Sheriff records
- Burgh Records: Burgh
