NC Native American genealogy

It is possible to have Native American heritage within any line of your family. My first suggestion is to take an autosomal DNA test, like the one offered by Ancestry.com, to see if your DNA contains that heritage. If the tested person has none, it may just be that they didn’t inherit that DNA, so another person’s test may contain the heritage. If all persons test negative, the likelihood of Native American heritage is small.

• Coastal Carolina Indians. This site begins with how-to information and has various databases of names.
• The National Archives holds records of interactions between tribes and the federal government. Perhaps not directly related to one's genealogical quest, but very useful in terms of understanding tribal recognition.
• NC GenWeb page on Native Americans. An EXTREMELY useful web site, covering just about all aspects of what one might be researching.
• Native American census records at Ancestry.
• NCpedia with more information.
• UNC American Indian Center, listing tribal web sites, wherein one may find tribal rolls and other information.
• Cyndi's List.
• Trace Indian Ancestry at the US Dept of the Interior.
