Apprenticeships are different than indentures. The former is a way for a person to learn a trade, whereas the latter is a labor contract. One can learn a trade under an indenture, and some apprenticeships were contractual. The two are intertangled. There is an excellent article on the apprenticships of free persons of color available at the Chatham Historical Association.
